How to Love When You Don't Agree

By, Bethany Young

But speaking the truth in love,

may grow up into him in all things,

which is the head, even Christ.

Ephesians 4:15

You can accept someone without approving of their sin.

You can love someone without agreeing with their lifestyle.

You can care for someone without sacrificing conviction.

How can you practically show you love someone when you don't agree with their actions?

1. Just listen.

Ask them how they came to their conclusions. Hear their stories and their struggles. Lovingly listen to them without degrading their opinions or defending your point of view hastily.

2. Assure them that your love isn't dependent on their choices.

God's love isn't dependent on our works, so why would we withhold our love based on other's works? Even if you think this is understood, you can never overstate that nothing will come in between your love for them.

3. Share truth and grace.

Once you've listened and reassured your love, then share the truth with grace. If you do this out of order, oftentimes what results is a hasty or angry conversation. When you've started with love then give truth, it is better received and leaves you with less regrets.

Love does not mean an absence of truth,

yet truth should not be shared with the absence of love.
