1 John 5:13, “I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”
I watch the super bowl every year with my husband. The truth is I don’t enjoy the game very much at all. I watch the game for the commercials. They’re usually very funny and clever, and I appreciate creative advertising.
There was a very clever commercial during the super bowl this year. It was a mortgage commercial with Tracy Morgan. The people who are house hunting say, “I’m pretty sure we can afford this house.”
Tracy Morgan comes in and says, “Pretty sure?” He then precedes to show them why pretty sure is not sure enough. He says, “I’m pretty sure these aren’t poisonous.” Referring to snake bites. He says, “I’m pretty sure these are parachutes.” as they are about to jump out of an airplane.
At the end, the house hunters state, “Certain is better.”
I immediately thought of eternity. There are many people who will say, “I’m pretty sure I will go to Heaven when I die.” I’ve personally heard people say this many times.
What about you? Are you only pretty sure of your salvation? Are you hoping you will go to heaven when you die? Are you trying to be good enough for God, but unsure of whether or not you are? Are you pretty sure you will get into Heaven based on your baptism?
“Pretty sure” isn’t sure enough.
Not when it comes to all eternity. Don’t leave your eternal destiny to “Pretty sure.”
Jesus loves you and doesn’t want you to guess, or hope, or be uncertain of your eternal soul in any way. He wants you to know for certain that you are saved and on your way to an eternity with Him. We see this in 1 John 5:13 where John records for us, “I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life…” The Bible was written so that you and I could believe in Jesus and know for absolutely sure we have eternal life.
You don’t have to doubt, wonder, or hope so. You can know. What a beautiful blessing from God! We can have complete confidence in our salvation through faith in Jesus Christ!
To be certain of our eternal destiny brings peace, comfort, and confidence.
Jesus paid the penalty we deserved for our sin. When He was on the cross He stated, “It is finished.” He finished the work of salvation. We don’t need to work for it, we need only to believe and place our faith in Him alone. When we do, we are promised eternal life. No question about it. It’s a sure promise from God. We see this in the previous verses in 1 John 5, “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
If you are only pretty sure of your eternity, trust Jesus today. Remember, pretty sure isn’t sure enough. When we put our faith in Jesus for salvation we become certain of our eternity and certain is much better than pretty sure.
