The Small Things Matter

By, Jen Helton

“Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food,

and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness.”

2 Corinthians 9:10

This is a true story about someone who did a small thing that led to another small thing that led to another small thing. All these small things were the intricate pieces of a puzzle. And they all led to something MASSIVE!

It all started with a trip to the mechanic. Actually, it started with a loaf of bread. WAIT, I am wrong! It started with a pandemic called COVID. Oh my stars, I am wrong again; it started in 2018 with a Spanish church in Las Vegas.

My husband and I are missionaries to Spain and in June of 2018, we returned to the States to report to supporting churches, including some new churches. One of these new churches was in Las Vegas. While presenting our ministry in the missions conference, the Spanish ministry there blessed our family with a brand new Kitchen Aid mixer!

Fast forward to March 2020, and we heard the word “COVID” for the first time as Spain confined us all into our homes. I began using the Kitchen Aid mixer to make sourdough bread for the neighbors. I would use gloves, bake the bread, wrap it twice and stick a Spanish Bible verse on it. My husband would then walk to neighbors’ doors wearing gloves and a mask while carrying the bread on a tray so as not to touch a thing.

Fast forward to August 2021. One of those neighbors started attending our church. It was during this time that we started having an evangelistic push in which we challenged our people to take three invitations from the church and invite people throughout the week. This neighbor had taken his vehicle to the mechanic in October. While waiting to get it repaired, he decided to pass out the three invitations. One of the people who received an invitation was a woman from Colombia.

This woman came to our church the following Sunday with her nephew. She continued to attend but her nephew did not return. We had a special Thanksgiving meal and he came again. We had a chance to talk to him but didn’t see him after that UNTIL… this Sunday.

This past Sunday, he returned with his aunt. They walked in the door and naturally, we were overjoyed to see him after more than two months. After the service, we sat around and chatted a bit. This woman began sharing how she enjoyed hearing about the Great Commission and then

ALL THE PIECES FELL INTO PLACE!

She went on to tell us that she shared the Gospel with her nephew and… HE GOT SAVED!

2 Corinthians 9:10 said that the seeds we sow multiply; our little seeds matter. The Spanish church that purchased a Kitchen Aid for a missionary wife?… it mattered. The bread we made for the neighbors?…it mattered. The church invitation that our neighbor put in a woman’s box?…it mattered. The Gospel that a woman shared with her nephew?…it mattered. The salvation of that young man who found new life in Jesus Christ?…it mattered.

The small things we do matter. We have no idea what God is doing behind the scenes but these seeds, these small things we do, matter. It is because of many small things that a young man is now a child of God! And that is what truly matters.
